Who we are

OpenMedia is an award-winning community-based organization that safeguards the possibilities of the open Internet. We work toward informed and participatory digital policy by engaging hundreds of thousands of people in protecting our online rights.

OpenMedia International brings the global pro-Internet community together, empowering people to participate in Internet governance through fresh and engaging citizens campaigns. We provide the Internet freedom movement with a platform to pressure leaders everywhere when bureaucrats and lobbyists threaten our digital future.

Prior to launching OpenMedia International, our Canadian operation, OpenMedia.ca, successfully defended the Internet from threats to openness, affordability, privacy and media choice. With encouragement from our dedicated supporters, in 2012 we took our effective model of rallying people to the global level, to fight back against worldwide threats.

From the beginning the Internet has always been about us: those who use the Internet to connect with one another, to create, to express ourselves, and to make our lives just a little bit easier. The Internet has no borders, and neither should we.

Our Work

OpenMedia engages, educates, and empowers people to safeguard the open and affordable Internet through our citizen-driven campaigns.

Our founding organization, OpenMedia.ca, is perhaps best known for co-ordinating Stop The Meter, the largest online campaign in Canadian history, involving over half-a-million people. We’ve proven that the pro-Internet community can come together and make change.

Bringing citizen voices to government:

  • Appearing at regulatory proceedings, trade negotiations, and other forums for policymaking on behalf of citizens.
  • Meeting with politicians to push for more citizen-centered policies.
  • Creating tools that allow citizens to communicate directly with politicians and other decision-makers.

Structure

OpenMedia.org operates as a network of people and organizations who have come together to advance fundamental principles set out in the Declaration of Internet Freedom.

Principles

We support transparent and participatory processes for making Internet policy based on five basic principles set out in the Declaration of Internet Freedom:

Expression: Don't censor the Internet.

Access: Promote universal access to fast and affordable networks.

Openness: Keep the internet an open network where everyone is free to connect, communicate, write, read, watch, speak, listen, learn, create, and innovate.

Innovation: Protect the freedom to innovate and create without permission. Don’t block new technologies, and don’t punish innovators for their users' actions.

Privacy: Protect privacy and defend everyone’s ability to control how their data and devices are used.
