The battle against Big Telecom’s Internet Slow Lane plan is really heating up - and it’s never been more important to speak out. Decision-makers are on the verge of making new rules that will either open the door to Internet slow lanes, or preserve the free and open Internet for future generations.
Key decision makers at the FCC been forced to delay their vastly unpopular plan but they haven't made public commitment to stop the Big Telecom from slowing down some of our favorites online services. We're partnering with our friends a RootsAction to give you a new tool to amplify your voice.
A lot is at stake. If the telecom giants get their way, the Internet as we know it would change forever: Big Telecom giants like Comcast and Verizon are pushing for new rules that would make your Internet more expensive, while slowing every website that can’t pay expensive new prioritisation fees to a crawl.
Many of your favorite websites could be condemned to this Internet slow lane, making them almost unwatchable, and stifling innovation and new startups for generations to come. This impact will be felt in all 50 states, and even in other countries around the world.
As community member Rob Dupuis told us on Facebook:
“If anybody wants slow lanes/fast lanes they're obviously looking to profit over it. Nobody in their right minds would want this separation.”
Big Telecom has been piling on the pressure on key decision-makers at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to agree to their reckless plan - but Internet users everywhere have been pushing back in massive numbers, a point our own Josh Tabish made when he went to the White House to meet senior Obama administration officials.
Over 5 million have already spoken out - and we’re making a big impact. Under pressure from millions of Americans, President Obama himself called on key decision-makers at the FCC to put a stop to the Slow Lane plan, by reclassifying Internet service under Title II of the Communications Act.
Despite this stunning presidential intervention, FCC Chair and former telecom lobbyist Tom Wheeler still hasn’t got the message. He’s refusing to do the right thing, despite calls from millions of citizens, hundreds of businesses and public interest groups, leading newspapers, and even the president himself.
This is why we need to keep up the pressure and make clear to the FCC and every member of congress that there will be a steep price to pay if they side with Big Telecom over millions of Americans.
Now we’ve made it even easier for you to speak out: We’ve worked with our partners at Roots Action to create a new tool to get your voices into local newspapers from coast to coast across the U.S.
