The countdown has begun. Decision-makers at the FCC will soon make their final ruling on Big Telecom’s Internet slow lane plan. They’ve announced that they will hold their final vote at their February 26th meeting.
From what we’re hearing, the FCC has heard our call and is heading in the right direction. The agency’s Chairman and former telecom lobbyist Tom Wheeler has all but confirmed that they are considering the strongest rules possible to prevent slow lanes online during a speech at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It looks like full Title II reclassification of broadband Internet services is not just a far-flung idea anymore.
However, there are still a few weeks left for Big Telecom’s lobbyists to scare the FCC into doing the wrong thing. Decision-makers are obviously feeling the pressure, and understand the proper path forward – but they need to hear from you and your community to seal the deal.
If we don’t get the word out now, Big Telecom giants could still win the power to slow our favorite websites, hike up prices, and fundamentally restrict how we express ourselves online – ruining everything we love about the web in the process.
In response, we’ve partnered with RootsAction to create a new tool to amplify your voice. U.S. readers can spread the word in your local paper with our easy-to-use Letter to the Editor tool now.
For the last couple months, FCC Chair Tom Wheeler has been dragging his feet looking for a sneaky way to give telecom giants like Comcast the rules they need to slow every website that can’t pay expensive new prioritization fees.
And our community members know what this means for Internet users. As Sebastien Lemieux points out on Facebook, if slow lanes are allowed on the Internet, then,
“...Facebook will add more advertisement in your feed and Netflix will be more expensive. There is no company that will pay a fast line and not make you pay for it.”
This is why it’s never been more important for you to get the word out in your local community right now. Get the word out through our tool today.
The clock is ticking. We need to make sure the FCC and Members of Congress know that the public demands nothing less the strongest rules possible to stop this slow lane plan and protect Net Neutrality.
Use our hard-hitting tool and make sure Tom Wheeler knows we’ll never accept Big Telecom’s Slow Lane plan.
A lot is at stake. The impact of these rules will be felt in all 50 states, and could set a global standard for other countries around the world.
President Obama has already asked the FCC to do the right thing and protect Net Neutrality by reclassifying broadband under Title II of the Communications Act.
Now we need you to do the same. Join the movement for free speech online now.
