Chad Koh: Protect our shared resource: Step up for the net!

Thu, 12/18/2014 - 12:28 -- Eva Prkachin

Tech leaders like Chad are stepping up to help us save the open Internet. Check out what he has to say, and learn more at

Article by Chad Koh

The internet is like the sea, a vast and shared resource that we all depend on. Unfortunately we do not have anything like UNCLOS to help protect that resource from the countries and companies that threaten it. So much of the innovation and content on the internet is the result of individual users like us. Well, so is the responsibility to protect it.

The Internet is at a turning point and here’s some good news

Tue, 12/16/2014 - 14:59 -- Chris Malmo

Hi there, I’m Chris Malmo, a grassroots development coordinator at OpenMedia, and it’s my job to help our community interact and communicate with our team.

It’s been a big year for your OpenMedia team, but I’d like to step back and think about what it all means and the movement we’re a part of.

As the first generation to come online, we have a responsibility to leave the best possible Internet for future people with dreams just like ours.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

Tue, 12/02/2014 - 13:18 -- Eva Prkachin

Every year since OpenMedia’s founding we’ve organized a major push to sign up new monthly donors in December. It’s the success of this drive that keeps our campaigns running all through the year, and the people who have signed up have played a critically important role in protecting the possibilities of the open Internet.

Today, December 2nd 2014, is “Giving Tuesday”. You might not be familiar with it, but Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 as an altruistic response to the commercialism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The day encourages people to think selflessly by donating or volunteering for a cause they care about, and always falls on the first Tuesday of December.

This year, Giving Tuesday happens to fall on the official start of OpenMedia’s December Monthly Allies Drive, so I thought I would take the opportunity to write a bit about how awesome our monthly donors are.

Thank you

While we continue pushing back against government imposed online spying, we want to report back and thank the community members who stepped up recently.

Back in May we sent you an appeal for an ad targeting the lead decision-maker behind the secretive and extreme Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). As you probably know by now, the TPP is an international agreement that threatens to censor your web activity.

I want to personally thank everyone who contributed and enabled us to publish your ad letting TPP chief Michael Froman know that we’re watching him!

Click this link – check out the picture of the ad now, and consider taking the next step with us by becoming an OpenMedia Ally.

This won't last

Tue, 05/28/2013 - 05:20 -- Steve Anderson

You won’t believe this. We just found out that anti-Internet lobbyists are hosting happy hour parties in Washington to increase their influence over key TPP decision makers.1 They’re sipping cocktails and literally making their careers out of criminalizing our day-to-day Internet use.

But we have a unique opportunity to push back if we act fast...

That's amazing

Wed, 05/22/2013 - 03:50 -- Chris Malmo

Over 138,000 of you worldwide have spoken out against the TPP’s global threat to Internet freedom.

That’s amazing and our voice is getting stronger – but as we gain momentum lobbyists are also ramping up the pressure for Internet censorship rules though closed-door meetings with our government representatives in Peru.

Over 138,000 of you worldwide have spoken out against this global threat to Internet freedom. Now, we’re taking the next step: putting your message in TPP decision-makers' hands. With your contribution to our campaign now, we can run an attention-grabbing ad in a major Washington newspaper to show them we’re serious and we won’t go away.

Why I support OpenMedia: Christina's story

Mon, 12/31/1973 - 16:48 -- Joel Milne

We asked our community to share stories about why they support our work as part of our yearly December Allies Drive. Christina Bub of Ontario, Canada had this to say:

"OpenMedia does all the leg-work – they tear down the hurdle that prevents people from taking action, so their campaigns reflect the true number of like-minded people who care about the open Internet."
Help us continue to work for you by making a contribution to OpenMedia at and read more of Christina's story here.

Stop the world from going dark

Thu, 12/06/2012 - 10:00 -- OpenMedia

Following last week's shutdown of Syria's Internet access, a new analysis has been released of the countries most vulnerable to a digital blackout.

With the ongoing ITU discussions and Trans-Pacific Partnership trade talks, the possibility of countries losing their Internet access is increasing – as is the erosion of human rights online.

Let's stop the world from going dark. Join us in becoming an OpenMedia Ally at

From the beginning, OpenMedia has been about you

Wed, 11/21/2012 - 09:40 -- Stephen Ludlow

With the support of people like you, OpenMedia was founded just four years ago to engage citizens in key decisions that affect the Internet’s future. In the face of telecom giants and governments that want to control the Internet, we’ve watched as the pro-Internet community has come together and grown into an empowered international movement.
